What is the definition of "on deployment"?

Deployment refers to being in a war-like zone (as defined by Section 2 of the Tax Amendment Regulations 2009 No. 2) or in a destination to which the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised against all travel. There is a 12 month waiting period if accidental death occurs while on deployment.

How does it affect my cover if I am on deployment?

You will be immediately covered for injuries caused by accidents from the time you take out the policy whether you are on deployment or in a DFAT no-go area or anywhere else. However, you will only be covered for accidental death on deployment or in a DFAT DO NOT TRAVEL zone if you have held the policy for at least 12 months. Accidental death is an optional extra on the insurance.

Doesn't the ADF pay my medical costs if I have an accident?

Yes, but you may find you have other non-medical costs as well. For example, transport costs to wherever you’re being treated.

If you have a serious injury, you may not be able to do your current job and will need to pay for new occupational training or you might have to renovate your house to cater for your disability, and pay for regular help around the house.

If your partner is injured you might need to pay for someone to look after your children, cook the meals, or do the housework or shopping.

Even if you have family and friends providing all this support you might want to have some extra cash to be able to thank them for all their help.

What exactly does the Injury & Accident product provide?

If you get injured as the result of an accident it will give you some cash. The amount of cash you get depends on the type of injury and how serious it is. Even if you have other entitlements to compensation this insurance still provides you with the cash.

If you apply for this insurance, you will be automatically accepted. You don’t need to take a medical and it makes no difference if you’re in a combat zone or about to go off to a war zone, you will still be covered by the insurance. Your spouse or partner can also be covered, which will automatically include all dependent children at no extra cost.

You can also choose to take out the accidental death cover option. If you take up this option, there is a 12 month waiting period before you can claim for accidental death while on deployment or in a country to which the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised against all travel.

Can you just tell me what it covers, how much I get and what it costs?

It covers you for various injuries incurred as a result of an accident. What you get depends on what injuries you incur and what level of cover you have chosen. There are three levels to choose from. What you pay depends on the level of cover you have chosen and whether you’ve covered just yourself or your partner or spouse as well. The PDS and Policy Wording will give you all this information.

Does it cover me if I die in an accident?

Yes, if you have taken out accidental death cover as an option. But if you die whilst on deployment or in a country to which the Dept of Foreign Affairs & Trade has advised against all travel, you must have held the policy for 12 months before a claim can be made in these particular circumstances.

Is being shot by the enemy considered an accident?

Yes.
