Common procedures

If you are planning an admission to either a public or private hospital as a private patient, it is important to be informed about the likely costs. Your surgeon may have explained his/her fees to you but there may be other doctors also involved in your episode of care. For example, there may be an anaesthetist and/or an assistant surgeon involved, and all associated doctors such as these will charge fees in addition to those of your surgeon.

Download a list of the 20 most common procedures performed in hospital. The list shows other doctors that may be involved in your episode of care. This will give you an opportunity to determine any other medical costs that may be incurred. Either check with your surgeon or contact the other doctors individually and ask them if you will have any out-of-pocket expenses.

Defence Health has agreements with many pathology and diagnostic imaging companies. Services provided by any of these companies while you are an admitted patient of a recognised hospital or day facility centre will be fully covered under the agreement.

This information is provided by the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) and is a broad guide only. It may change on a patient by patient basis. Remember to ask your doctor who else might be involved in your procedure before you are admitted to hospital.
