How to claim
Hospital claims
In most cases when you are discharged from hospital, Defence Health will settle your account directly with the hospital.
If your hospital stay was subject to any limitations or waiting periods, and involved:
- the payment of an excess as defined by your level of cover
- a small per day charge for an executive or similiar suite or
- any personal expenses (phone calls, newspapers etc.),
then you will be responsible for the expense and the hospital may require settlement on discharge.
In-hospital medical claims
To maximise your benefits we suggest your doctor sends the account directly to Defence Health. If there is an amount payable by you, your doctor will advise you prior to treatment.
If for any reason, your doctor is not willing to send the account directly to Defence Health, we encourage you to send it to us. However, the account must be suitably endorsed, show financial consent for any amounts payable by you and instruct you to send the claim directly to your health fund.
If these details are not present on the account, you will be required to send the account to Medicare. In this case, Defence Health will cover the difference between the Medicare rebate and the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee. Any amount above the MBS fee will need to be paid by you.
Get a benefit estimate first
We recommend you contact Defence Health for a benefit estimate before commencing treatment. Benefits will not be payable for services that are recoverable from another source such as Workers Compensation, third party or other liability provision. Full claiming conditions will be provided to you upon joining Defence Health, or visit the claiming conditions page.
