We know you want more flexibility with your health cover. Flexi-limits gives you the flexibility to claim more on your favourite included extras, under an overall limit. Plus our great dental and optical benefits still apply.

The flexi-limit can be claimed across the range of included treatments, or you can choose to use it on your favourite included treatment.  

Which products have flexi-limits?

Premier Extras, Value Extras and Essentials Extras products, as well as the ADF Total Package and ADF Essentials package.


What treatments are included in the flexi-limit?

ADF Total Package, Premier Extras and Value Extras
Physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, antenatal & postnatal services, exercise physiology, psychology, podiatry/chiropody, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietitian, eye therapy, audiology, pharmacy and vaccinations.

ADF Essentials Package & Essentials Extras
Physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, exercise physiology and travel vaccinations. 

How does the flexi-limit work?

  • Only the listed treatment is included. Dental, optical, health and wellbeing and medical devices remain separate treatments with their own limits.
  • Flexi-limit benefits will reset on 1 July each year along with most other extras benefits.
  • The flexi-limit can be claimed across the range of included treatments or just one of the treatments.
  • Any claims you’ve already made since 1 July will be counted under your flexi-limit. Eg. If your new limit is $1,500 and you’ve already claimed $600, then you have $900 for the rest of the year to claim on whichever included treatment you like.
  • You can check your limits in Online Member Services
  • Flexi-limits do not apply to Top Extras or Standard Extras

I would like flexi-limits, but they aren’t on my product

If you are on Top Extras or Standard Extras, flexi-limits do not apply. If you would like the extra flexibility of flexi-limits, you are able to move to a suitable product that does include flexi-limits.

If you are changing your extras product, you may also need to change your hospital product to a currently available cover. For example, if you are currently on Top Hospital and Top Extras and that cover meets your needs, we would recommend moving to Ultimate Hospital and Value Extras. After this change, you will be unable to move back to a closed extras or hospital product.

Waiting periods may apply if you are increasing your level of cover.

  • What are flexi-limits?

  • Why aren’t dental and optical included in the flexi-limit?

    You still get great benefits on dental and optical. Dental, optical (and the other standalone treatment categories) are fundamental to general health. Dental care is a must have. If you wear glasses, you need your optical benefits. So we’ve kept them separate for you to make the most of all aspects of your extras cover. 

  • Do I get flexi-limits on my product?

    Flexi-limits are available on the following products:  ADF Total Package, ADF Essentials Package Premier Extras, Value Extras & Essentials Extras

    If flexi-limits are not available on your product, you may want to consider moving your extras to one of the above. If you have hospital cover, you may have to change your hospital cover as well.

  • I would like flexi-limits, but they aren’t on my product

    If you would like the extra flexibility of flexi-limits, you are able to move to a suitable product that does include flexi-limits. If you are on a closed product and you would like to change your extras product, you may also need to change your hospital product to an open product. 

    After this change, you will be unable to move back to a closed product.

    Waiting periods may apply if you are increasing your level of cover.

  • Will I have a waiting period for my flexi-limit?

    Waiting periods apply when:

    • you are taking up health insurance for the first time or have had a break in cover of two or more months,
    • you transfer from another fund before completing equivalent waiting periods,
    • you upgrade to a higher level of cover at Defence Health, including by reducing or removing an excess.

    If you are joining Defence Health for the first time, normal waiting periods will apply.

          If you are an existing Defence Health member and you are on one of the following levels of cover, there are no additional waiting periods for flexi-limits. ADF Total Package, ADF Essentials Package, Premier Extras, Value Extras & Essentials Extras.
          If you’re an existing Defence Health member and you are not on one of these levels of cover and change your level of extras you will have a two month waiting period before you can access the full flexi-limit and any additional benefits.
  • What about claims I’ve already made?

    Any claims you have already made since 1 July will be counted under your flexi-limit. Eg. If your limit is $1,500 and you’ve already claimed $600 then you have $900 for the rest of the financial year to claim on whichever included treatment you like.

  • What if I’ve already reached my limits for a treatment?

    If you have Premier, Value or Essentials Extras, or the ADF Total Package or ADF Essentials Package, you’re in luck. You will be able to access additional benefits, up to your new flexi-limit.

    For example, if your new flexi- limit is $1,500 and you’ve already claimed $600 on treatments now included under the flexi-limit, then you have $900 for the rest of the financial year to claim on whichever included treatment you like.

  • Do I still get 100% back on initial consultations?

    If you have Premier Extras or the ADF Total Package, you will continue to receive 100% back on your first visit to an applicable treatment, within annual limits. The benefits for follow-up consultations have increased and will be paid according to your level of cover. Check your 1 October product guide for the benefits that apply to your cover.
