Going to hospital checklist

Planning your hospital visit and being fully aware of your condition, treatment options and associated costs will help to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Talk to your doctor

It’s important that you take the time to learn about your condition and all the available treatment options so you can be confident in your decisions. Your doctor or specialist should be able to provide you with enough information for you to feel comfortable that all your questions have been answered.

If you’re not sure what to ask your doctor about your condition, here’s a list of questions for you to consider:

  • What is my condition and why do I need treatment?
  • What can I expect from the treatment?
  • How do I know I’m getting the right treatment?
  • How long should I wait before scheduling my procedure?
  • Are you willing to use Access Gap to reduce or eliminate my medical gap?
  • Who will be involved in my procedure?
  • Are there any risks with my procedure?
  • How long will I be in hospital?
  • What will my recovery be like?
  • Where can I find out more information about my condition and treatment options?

You should also talk to your doctor about the costs involved in your procedure. Your doctor should be able to provide you with an estimate of the potential expenses associated with your treatment

Before you go into hospital, check …

  • Have I phoned Defence Health to check my level of cover?
  • Do I have an excess? If so, how much is it? (you should be prepared to pay this at the time of admission)
  • Have I served all necessary waiting periods?
  • Are my premium payments up to date?
  • Is my treatment covered by my policy?
  • Have I chosen an agreement hospital?
  • What time will I need to arrive at hospital?
  • Do I know who will be involved in my procedure?
  • How long will I be staying at hospital?
  • Do I know what my out-of-pocket costs are?
  • How long will my recovery take?
